June was a busy month with activities to better connect with our volunteers and the public: Region Volunteer Leadership Conferences, National Volunteer Week, and a targeted recruitment pilot.

The Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon Tracey Martin, has announced the appointments of Malcolm Inglis from Whanganui and Wendie Harvey from Napier to the Fire and Emergency New Zealand Board for a term of three years. The Minister has also reappointed Te Arohanui Cook for a further three year term. All appointments are effective from 1 July 2018.

Development of the Availability and Messaging System (AMS) has started and we expect it to be ready later this year. Our priority is to transfer current Volunteer Availability Communications System (VACS) users to the new AMS.
You will soon start seeing our firefighters on bus stops, on signage, at community markets in Auckland and Wellington, and on radio. They are sharing their stories as part of our national campaign to recruit more career firefighters.
In the Hawke’s Bay, we’re helping out with first aid training, removing rubbish and cutting grass. In the Waikato we’re spreading the message about fire risks inside and outside rural properties, with smoke and tractors.
Akaroa Fire Station was officially re-opened on 16 June and construction of a new station for Upper Hutt is expected to be finished by mid-2019.
