The Te Pae Tata programme was established in December 2021 and encompassed 12 risk reduction projects and initiatives in the Wildfire, Fire Investigation, Fire Engineering and Regulatory Compliance areas.

Te Pae Tata translates to ‘the close horizon’ and comes from the whakataukī in Fire and Emergency’s Commitment Statement:

Ko te pae tawhiti, whāia kia tata, ko te pae taka, whakamaua kia tina | Pursue distant horizons until they are within reach, once in reach hold them and treasure them

The projects aimed to improve our risk reduction activities to benefit our communities and the environment and ranged from creating policy and guidance around the application of firebreaks to developing a training course for Fire Behaviour Analysts, trialling satellite-based grass curing methods, to improving how we communicate wildfire risk to communities. The Programme was completed at the end of June 2023.

Completion of the Te Pae Tata programme is an important milestone in building Fire and Emergency’s Service Delivery intelligence and capability and will help improve the organisation’s risk reduction activities. It’s vital that the Programme’s learnings and initiatives continue to be implemented, the workstreams are now being handed over to business owners as part of BAU.

What’s next?

A retrospective report is underway to identify and document what went well, what didn't go as planned, and what could be improved for future initiatives such as Te Pae Tata.

The Te Pae Tata programme team are also running a series of presentations showcasing the projects and what’s been achieved so our Districts can see how the Programme’s outcomes can benefit their own work.
