We have started public consultation on the proposed Fire and Emergency levy for the period 1 July 2026 – 30 June 2029. Consultation will close on 17 May 2024 at 5pm.

This is a significant milestone for Fire and Emergency.

Almost all of our funding comes directly from the public through a levy paid on contents, vehicle and building insurance policies and the views of levy payers are important to us.

We have taken a ‘digital first’ approach to this consultation with a focus on enabling participation from the general public and targeting representatives of important audiences, including our communities and industry.

At the heart of our digital first approach is Citizen Space, an online consultation platform that let’s you easily engage in the discussion that is relevant to you. You can view the consultation platform here: https://consultation.fireandemergency.nz/(external link)

You can download the discussion document(external link) on our website, on our consultation platform.(external link)

We are keen to hear your thoughts on our proposals. We also encourage you to talk about the consultation with your colleagues, whānau and friends and invite them to participate.

It is important that you remember you have a unique position in this consultation. We ask you to respond as a levy payer rather than as staff or volunteer of Fire and Emergency. As always, it is important you consider your role as someone who is part of a public agency. If you are concerned about what this means or how to navigate a potential conflict, speak with your manager.

The feedback you provide will inform the Government’s decisions on the final levies for 2026-2029.

If you have any questions about the consultation or about the levy, email the team at LevyFeedback@fireandemergency.nz
