Earlier this year, an Eke Taumata work programme was established to start the long-term workplace culture change needed to ensure a positive work experience for our people.

Today, we have published our first Eke Taumata six-monthly progress report.

This report covers the period up to 30 June 2023 and outlines work we have underway or have completed against the 20 recommendations in the Te Kawa Mataaho Public Service Commission review released in December 2022(external link), as well as the day-to-day mahi we’re doing to uplift workplace behaviour and culture across the organisation.

The report demonstrates that a lot of meaningful work has begun to make Fire and Emergency a safer, healthier, and more inclusive workplace.

But we know changing the culture of our organisation will take time and require genuine changes to our attitudes and behaviours. Who we are as an organisation is the result of what we do, say, and accept each day, and we all have a responsibility for this mahi.

Supporting our organisation to achieve this goal remains one of the three top priorities for the Board, and for me.

You can read the full report(external link) on our website.

This week, we also saw the release of the decision document for our complaints management system.

Our new operating model for complaints management allows us to address the critical issues with the current system you identified through the consultation and engagement process. You can read more on the Portal.

Ngā mihi nui (thank you) to everyone who participated in the consultation and engagement processes to inform the final decisions in the decision document, and to everyone who puts in the mahi (work) to make Fire and Emergency a great place to work.
