As the time we’re spending online increases, so do the security risks.

The Government’s Computer Emergency Response Team’s (CERT NZ) latest data shows that online security incident reports are up 48% from this time last year. These incidents are impacting our finances, our friends, family and workplaces.

This week (10– 16 October) is Cyber Smart Week and a chance for all of us at Fire and Emergency to take our online security to the next level.

Throughout the week we will be sharing tips for keeping yourself safe online and ensuring you don’t expose yourself, or the organsiation, to cyber threats.

With these steps in place, the risk of experiencing an incident is much lower, and if you are impacted, having these steps in place will help reduce the repercussions.

If we don’t get it right, then we potentially open ourselves, and our organisation, up to cyber attack, which could lead to financial loss, privacy breaches or identity fraud.

If you have not already done so, please also make sure you complete the online learning module for Information Security on Learning Station(external link)(external link) and read the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Acceptable Use Policy(external link)(external link) so you know the rules around the use of our equipment and sharing of information.

If you have any concerns about your cyber security at work, please do not hesitate to get in touch with our IT team: ITSupport@fireandemergency.nz or call 0800 374 843.

Keep an eye on the Portal news section for more information about this later in the week.
