“I [saw] kids who, we were all in the same class, and the teachers treated them differently than they would treat me. I had a teacher tell me that I would never amount to anything and I would never be successful.”

– Michael Phelps, Olympic swimmer

Today we proudly launch our newest employee led network: Neurodiversity network | Kanorau Ā-roro.

Employee led networks (ELNs) are groups of people from different communities that come together to connect, share ideas, support each other, inspire others, and grow. ELNs are one way we can support a culture of diversity and inclusion at Fire and Emergency.

A common mantra in the neurodiverse community is ‘If you’ve met one neurodiverse person, you’ve met one neurodiverse person.’ We are all unique and bring different strengths to what we do. Neurodiversity is a valuable form of diversity that we want to support, promote, and celebrate at Fire and Emergency.

Our Neurodiversity network | Kanorau Ā-roro has been set up to provide a safe space and support for our neurodiverse personnel or those personnel who have neurodiverse whānau. It’s also a way others can learn about neurodiversity, so we learn and understand the best ways to work with and support our neurodiverse colleagues.

If you or someone you know would like to join us, get in touch with us via email. Our network is a safe space for everyone so whether you want to just sit quietly and listen to our kōrero or you want to be part of our governance group, we look forward to welcoming you.

Over the next few months, we will be asking the network to share their experiences at Fire and Emergency so we can brainstorm ways we can lift our voices in the organisation and provide support where needed.
