So, you’ve got someone who’s interested in volunteering and you want them to join the brigade? Here’s a quick overview of the steps involved from application to being issued with a number.

1. Complete the application form

Complete the online application form with the applicant. It’s easiest to do this on e-Recruit but if you don’t have access, you can also download the application form and email it to volly.applications@fireandemergency.nz.

Once the application has been submitted, the Brigade Leader or support personnel will start to receive automated weekly email progression reports from the Volunteer Recruitment Team confirming the status of the application.

2. Police vetting

The form requires applicants to agree to Police vetting, and to provide two forms of identification, such as a drivers’ license and passport. One of these must include photo identification.

You will be advised as to whether the applicant has passed the Police vetting or not, in your weekly report. The volunteer will be advised of the outcome of their Police vetting to their personal email address.

3. Medical assessments

As soon as the application form is submitted, the applicant will be emailed the relevant medical form they need to complete, if required (brigade support roles do not need to complete a medical).

You will be advised as to the applicant status or whether the applicant needs to complete a medical in your weekly report. Please check this and encourage people to get their medicals underway to keep their application moving.

4. Onboarding

Once the applicant has passed Police vetting and the relevant medical assessment, the Volunteer Recruitment Team issues their ID number which they will receive to their personal email address.

The new recruits IT details will be sent to the brigade leader, BSC or Volunteer Support Officer to distribute.

New recruits training material and induction pack will be sent to their home address.

You will be advised of this in your weekly report, where the application is assigned a new volunteer ID number. This is a good time to check that your new volunteer has received everything, and to get the induction process underway.
