Being a volunteer is a position that comes with responsibility. It requires trust and integrity.

When applicants complete an online application, they give consent for police vetting. It takes 20 working days or a full calendar month for Police vetting.

In some circumstances, we may request an urgent vetting which can shorten this time to seven working days.

The following people cannot volunteer with Fire and Emergency NZ:

  • Anyone with a conviction of arson
  • Anyone with a sexual offence history
  • Anyone with a serious conviction in the last seven years
  • Anyone with more than one minor conviction in the last five years
  • Anyone with unpaid fines, until paid

What to do if a person fails their police vetting

If a volunteer applicant fails the Police vetting, the Volunteer Recruitment Team will advise the Brigade leader and the applicant by email.

The brigade leader can request a review from Volunteer Recruitment. The team will advise on suitibility for review and liase with District Manager, Region Manager and Region HR Manager.

Please send any review requests to volly.applications@fireandemergency.nz
