The second Whanaungatanga Wellbeing Survey opened Thursday, 7 March.

The Whanaungatanga Programme aims to improve the wellbeing of career firefighters by making organisational changes that promote connection, trust, a strong sense of value and belonging.

The Wellbeing Survey is an important part of the programme and is run independently by the Auckland University of Technology (AUT).

The survey has been through the university’s ethics review and approval process. This includes ensuring participant confidentiality and appropriate use of data and data storage. Fire and Emergency is not involved in the collection of survey responses or analysis of the survey data, and no individual, watch, or station data will be shared with Fire and Emergency.

On Thursday, 7 March all employees who took part in last year’s survey (held in March 2023) were emailed the survey directly by AUT.

The email will has the subject ‘2024 Whanaungatanga Wellbeing Survey’ and is run using the Qualtrics platform. It is sent from Lisa Mackay, AUT Project Supervisor, lmackay@aut.ac.nz

This second survey will provide us with an important dataset. It will take another measure of employees’ perceptions of a range of wellbeing and organisational factors and how these may have changed since the first survey.

It takes around 30 minutes to complete and you can complete it at work or home on a computer or mobile device.

Some of the survey questions ask about sensitive topics such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and exposure to potentially traumatic events. You are free to skip questions that you do not wish to answer. If you would like to talk to someone about your mental health at any point, free support is available – visit the seek wellbeing support Portal page for more info.

Survey respondents in our pilot region Te Hiku will be asked some additional questions to measure the effectiveness of the interventions that have been developed and piloted in the region.

It also gives us an important comparison between our pilot region Te Hiku (where the interventions have been piloted) and the rest of the country.

Because this survey measures against last year’s, if you did not complete the survey last year you will be unable to take part. The next ‘your say’ people survey in June focuses on Safety, Health and Wellbeing and will be open to all personnel to share their thoughts.

The Whanaungatanga Programme is an important programme of work and is one of 15 international projects funded by the Movember Foundation in an endeavour to develop evidence-based mental ill-health and suicide prevention programmes for veterans and first responders.

It’s delivered in collaboration with the New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union (NZPFU) and the Fire and Emergency Commanders Association (FECA).
