Last week, the Court of Appeal advised that the New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union’s (NZPFU’s) application for leave to appeal the Employment Court decision will be heard in the week beginning 8 March. Yesterday afternoon we filed our written submission in response to the NZPFU’s application.

We believe that protecting our staff from redundancy is the right thing to do. From the beginning we have sought to avoid redundancies, and we have designed the redeployment and recruitment on that basis.

We were pleased that the Employment Court ruled in our favour last year, while of course respecting the NZPFU’s right to challenge that ruling. We look forward to the Court decision on this latest step.

In the meantime, we will keep moving forward with the Tranche 2 redeployment process, while following any Court instructions.

We will update you with the outcome of the appeal application and our next steps as soon as we know these.

If you have any questions about the leave to appeal or Tranche 2 in general, please contact jobapplications@fireandemergency.nz.
