On 16 October, Darrin Woods, Christchurch-based National Wildfire Specialist, delivered an information session on Understanding the Fire Weather Index (FWI) System.

The session covered a range of topics related to the FWI System, and was aimed as either an introduction for those who are unfamiliar with the system, or as a refresher for those who may have already received formal training on this subject matter.

 Topics included:

  1. Background and history of the FWI System in Aotearoa
  2. Outline of the structure of the FWI system
  3. Identifying the source of the input data and where to find the outputs
  4. Describing the various FWI system components, including basic interpretation
  5. Highlighting resources which identify critical threshold values for aiding in decision making
  6. Identifying some of the key applications which use FWI system outputs and the importance of using the figures to support fire management decisions
  7. Suggestions for where to go for assistance
