A Carterton volunteer firefighter and Massey University researcher wants to hear about your experiences as firefighters.

Jeannette Bertram, who is studying to become a clinical psychologist, is undertaking research as part of her PhD on how firefighters can be impacted by post-traumatic stress and the symptoms they may show.

“Both my husband and I joined the Carterton Fire Brigade in 2018, and through our experiences learnt what firefighters go through during and after incidents,” she says.

Part of her research is surveying as many active and former firefighters as possible, to get a better understanding of what factors play a role in the development and improvement of these psychological injuries.

“This knowledge will help in the development of strategies and interventions that can help Fire and Emergency, as well as similar response agencies, improve the mental health of its people,” Jeannette Bertram says.

Deputy Chief Executive People, Brendan Nally says, as an organisation we support this research and plan to consider its findings once they have been completed.

You can find the survey via this link(external link). It is available until 12 August.
