This week, from 10-16 May, we are celebrating New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) Week.

Our Chief Executive, Rhys Jones, has been showing his support by taking up NZSL Leaders’ Challenge. The Challenge promotes our organisation’s support of diversity and inclusion.

Watch Rhys take part in the Challenge in the video below.

This is the 15th year of New Zealand Sign Language Week and for the third time, our Prime Minister, Jacinda Adern, will lead the Leaders’ Challenge.

You can view previous Leaders’ Challenge 2020 videos(external link) on the Deaf Aotearoa Facebook page, as well as 2018(external link) and 2019(external link) on the website.

If you’d like to get involved with NZSL Week, keep an eye on the Portal this week for tips on how to communicate with deaf people, as well as a quiz about sign language. If you’re based at NHQ, there are a couple of NZSL taster classes today and tomorrow (10 and 11 May). For more information on the taster classes, please get in touch with Hannah Bonnett on hannah.bonnett@fireandemergency.nz.
