We’ve reached the second last day of Mental Health Awareness Week, and today we ask you to connect - me whakawhanaunga.

Connection is the ngākau (heart) of wellbeing. Nurturing our relationships leads to meaningful connection with others. When we feel understood, loved, and a sense of belonging, our wellbeing is greatly boosted.

Like any other tool we’ve practiced this week, we need to set time aside to practice connectedness. It doesn’t always come by accident, especially when you and those around you lead busy lives.

Why not try some of these ways to me whakawhanaunga with others:

  • Is there someone in your life going through a hard time? Reach out to them, offer your advice or just listen and empathise.
  • What better way to connect than over kai? Plan a potluck meal with your whānau or hoa (friends) and each bring your favourite dish.
  • Make a new connection! Get to know a new co-worker a bit better.
  • Unplug with your whānau and bring out some old board or card games.
