Happy hump day! Let’s get over the hump by getting our tinana (bodies) moving! For the third day of Mental Health Awareness week, we’re going to be active/me kori tonu.

When we engage in physical activity, our tinana release ‘feel-good’ hormones called endorphins. This has many benefits for our wellbeing, such as increased feelings of happiness, reduced stress and anxiety, and even sharpened thinking and boosted creativity.

Being active looks different for everyone. Move your tinana in a way that works for you and fits into your daily routine to really nurture your wellbeing.

Here’s how Sean Stocker, Senior Firefighter keeps Active:

Maybe one of these tips will help you me kori tonu today:

  • Head outside for a hīkoi (walk) or oma (run) in the bush or up your local maunga (mountain).
  • Throw a dance party with your whānau, flatmates, pets, or on your own! Put on your favourite songs and kanikani (dance) around like no one’s watching.
  • Try a new workout. If you go to a gym, go along to a class you’ve never been to, or pop on a YouTube workout for free!
  • If you’re in the office (te tari), skip the lift! Take the stairs today.
