Māori are disproportionately impacted by unwanted fires and emergencies and this needs to change. Almost half of the asset base of iwi and Māori are invested in “climate sensitive” industries (forestry, agriculture, fishing, and tourism) which are highly impacted by climate change related fires. The need to strengthen our service to deliver better outcomes for Māori is compelling. By building the support across hapori Māori this rautaki will have a positive flow on effect for other communities, building a safer Aotearoa for all.

The Rautaki Māori aims to create safer and more resilient Māori communities. The four pou (pillars) of the Rautaki Māori outline the work we will do to achieve this as well as detailing why it’s important and what will be different. The Rautaki Māori also allows us to see what success looks like. While the Rautaki Māori outlines the success we strive for, it doesn’t point to a date or time frame when our work will be done. The Rautaki Māori is the result of 6 months of mahi with representatives from volunteer and career firefighters, different leadership levels and representatives from across each of our branches and regions. It has also been designed with Māori representatives from the community. Two of the four pou are externally focused on hapori Māori becoming safe and resilient from fire. The other two pou are internally focused on our leader’s driving the initiative and our organsiation’s cultural capability uplift. It is the responsibility of everyone who belongs to our organisation now and in the future to realise the intentions of this rautaki.
