We are currently inviting expressions of interest from hapori Māori members to join our External Māori Advisory Rōpū, applications close 18th April. Find out more here.(external link)

Following our commitment to working with Māori as tangata whenua in 2018 and the establishment of the Kaupapa Māori and Cultural Communities branch in 2022, we have a responsibility to ensure the voice of Māori are captured across a range of kaupapa (initiatives) for Fire and Emergency New Zealand.

To achieve this our organisation's Executive Leadership Team will appoint an external Māori Advisory Rōpū with members across the motu (country).

The purpose of the Māori Advisory Rōpū is to provide advice and guidance to Fire and Emergency’s Executive Leadership Team on national kaupapa related to:

  • Giving effect to our commitment to working with Māori as tangata whenua
  • How to strengthen engagement and then partnerships between Māori and Fire and Emergency
  • Our work that has mutual interest to improve fire related outcomes for Māori communities
  • Creating safer and more resilient Māori communities from fire related incidents.

If you have any questions regarding the Māori Advisory Rōpū, please reach out via: maoriadvisoryropu@fireandemergency.nz

The Rōpū will meet quarterly throughout the year in a hybrid model of in-person and online.

We will communicate requests for submissions with details on timing of the next meeting. ELT will then review and prioritise all submissions to ensure they meet the criteria for kaupapa to be seen by the Rōpū.

As this is an Advisory Rōpū the decision making will remain solely with Fire and Emergency.

  • The Rōpū provides a formal avenue for ELT to seek cultural guidance when making decisions on our mahi. This allows you to factor cultural guidance into the planning of your projects and programmes.
  • By receiving advice on tikanga Māori (practices/customs) and te ao Māori (the Māori world view) we will be in a better place to foster respectful relationships and avoid cultural insensitivity.
  • The Māori Advisory Rōpū supports our commitment to working with Māori as tangata whenua as it recognises the mana and importance of whakaaro Māori (Māori thinking) when making impactful decisions across the organisation.
  • The Rōpū also supports the Crown’s Te Tiriti o Waitangi responsibilities by giving effect to the importance of the relationship between Māori and a Crown agency.

We are currently seeking ‘Expressions of Interest’ for the Māori Advisory Rōpū. We aim to have the Māori Advisory Rōpū inducted by 30 June 2024.

The Māori Advisory Rōpū will provide cultural advice on kaupapa which has a significant impact for the organisation. This refers to:

  • mahi with significant impact and influence across the organisation and new initiatives that may impact hapori Māori
  • mahi with collective benefit, looking for join opportunities important to Māori communities
  • mahi that supports and improves culture for the organisation.
