Fire and Emergency has been engaging with Crown Infrastructure Partners on a project to help install smoke alarms in marae across New Zealand as part of the Marae Digital Connectivity Programme.  We consider this an exciting opportunity to partner with other Crown agencies to assist marae to reduce risk from fire and discuss and review marae safety plans.

Through the programme, marae are receiving a hardware package, which includes installing Wi-Fi and an AV bundle to provide for teleconferencing and streaming.  Fire and Emergency has been approached to assist with installing a Wi-Fi-enabled smoke detector once the hardware package has been installed.  The smoke detector will connect through the internet to connected smart phones when the alarm is activated.  The alarm is being supplied by Crown Infrastructure Partners.

We are currently working with Crown Infrastructure Partners to confirm future arrangements, including our capacity to do the installations. More than 300 marae have signed up for the programme.
