At a 5th alarm fire in Auckland last week, three lengths of 90mm hose from the Hose Layer, being used in a water relay, each had a coupling detach. Two such issues occurred approximately 24 hours into the incident.

The PCA is the Physical Competency Assessment as referred to in the NZPFU and FECA collectives. This cycle of PCA remains unchanged and its testing is specific to the training and operational practise of urban built environment career operational staff. Three months’ notice is hereby given that all career staff who hold the following ranks, and who attend emergency incidents in an operational response or command capacity*, are required to successfully complete the PCA during 2024.

Crews can select ‘battery’ as a cause type, choose from various causes of battery fire, such as overheating or physical damage, and select a specific heat source, such as mobile phone, electric vehicle or vape/smoking device. If these are unknown or the specific option doesn’t exist in the pre-determined menu, crews will be able to manually add this information into the ‘comments’ tab of the SMS incident report.
