To help prepare for the wildfire season, Understanding the Fire Weather Index (FWI) System refresher course is being held on 16 October 2023, 1-2pm.

The course will cover a range of topics related to the FWI System, and is aimed as either an introduction for those who are unfamiliar with the system, or as a refresher for our people who may have already received formal training on this subject matter.

Reach out to Darrin.woods@fireandemergency.nz if you’d like to attend.

 Topics to be covered include:

  1. Background and history of the FWI System in Aotearoa
  2. Outline of the structure of the FWI system
  3. Identifying the source of the input data and where to find the outputs
  4. Describing the various FWI system components, including basic interpretation
  5. Highlighting resources which identify critical threshold values for aiding in decision making
  6. Identifying some of the key guidelines which use FWI system outputs and the importance of using the figures to support fire management decisions
  7. Suggestions for where to go for assistance

The session will not cover in any detail how to use the Fire Weather System public website or the FWSYS EcoConnect application.

At the conclusion of the session there will be the opportunity to ask questions, which will be supported by Grant Pearce, National Wildfire Scientist.

A recording of the presentation will be made availabe on this page for those not able to attend.
