To support Te Aho Tapu and to assess current cultural capability across all 6 pou of Te Aho Tapu and the shift measures after completion of training we have developed a self-reflection tool. Through answering patai the tool can assess where you currently sit within the pou and provides a learning path to support you in growing your capability level.

Who can use the Self-Reflection Tool?

The Self Reflection Tool is currently available to people involved in piloting Te Aho Tapu. This is because conversations need to happen regarding "where to from here?". We look forward to making the Self Reflection tool available for everyone at the completion of the pilot when Te Aho Tapu transitions into the business.

Why have a Self Reflection Tool?

Te Aho Tapu has six pou (areas) which you can progress within, so it's important to be able to assess what level of competency you currently sit at so we can support you to reach where you aspire to be.

Time expectation;

Self-reflection will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

The process;

We are currently using a Microsoft Form as an interim measure before our long term tool becomes available at the end of July, 2022.

The form is split up into each of the 6 pou, subject areas of Te Aho Tapu;

  • Te Hononga - Māori Crown Relationship
  • Te Rākau Matarua - Challenging racism
  • Te Ahu - New Zealand History and Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Te Ao Mārama - Kaupapa Māori, Worldview Knowledge
  • Te Tūāpapa - Tikanga and kawa when engaging with Māori
  • Te kai ā te Rangatira - Te Reo Māori

Step 1;

Under each pou, you will be asked 10 - 12 questions with each getting more expert as they go up.

  Example first question;

"I acknowledge Kaupapa Māori and Māori worldviews"

Step 2;

Reflecting on this statement you will then need to give it a rating from 1-4, these ratings refer to one of the below ;

  1. I disagree with this statement
  2. I somewhat disagree with this statement
  3. I somewhat agree with this statement
  4. I agree with this statement
  1. I can't do this
  2. I can't really do this yet and still have a bit to learn
  3. Mostly there, still need some help once in a while
  4. I can do this

Step 3;

After each section you will be asked to reflect on your answers and give yourself a capability level which best reflects where you are today;

  • Mostly 1s = Rongo - Listening and learning
  • Mostly 2s = Mōhio - Awareness
  • Mostly 3s = Mārama - Understanding
  • Mostly 4s = Mātau - Knowledge
