In the meantime, we have several resources available to support you in your cultural capability uplift today;

He Tīmatanga Kōrero is an introductory guide to Kaupapa Māori for Fire and Emergency New Zealand, designed to support you to start or progress your cultural education. The guide takes about an hour to read and is supported by an online module on Learning Station, which allows you to test your knowledge, build your pepehā and be awarded Te Tohu to wear. Physical copies of He Tīmatanga Kōrero are being distributed through the regions or you can request copies directly via our team email at the bottom of this page. Alternatively, you can download a copy here. [JPG, 20 KB]

This resource gives you foundational knowledge on tikanga for when you next engage with Māori in your role. After reading Te Tūāpapa, you will have an awareness of:

 ·       when you might need to engage with Māori

·       what tikanga is and where it can be applied

·       the concepts of tapu and noa

·       what a marae is and protocol when visiting one

·       using te reo Māori when engaging

·       tikanga at incidents

Physical copies of Te Tūāpapa are being distributed through the regions or you can request copies directly via our team email at the bottom of this page. Alternatively, you can download a copy here [PNG, 322 KB].

This video is designed to give you an appreciation of what to expect before being welcome onto a marae for the first time. It's been captured in 360 degrees to give you a better experience of what it's like. This video is compatible with Virtual Reality hardware. After watching He Pōhiri, you will have an awareness of:

Whakatau mai rā ngā manaakitanga
o te kāhui atua, o te kāhui tūpuna
kia noho houkura ai te taiāo
kia noho haumaru ai te tangata
whakatau mai rā ngā ūaratanga
ki te pae ngākau, ki te pae hinengaro
o te Kāhui Ratonga Ahi me ngā ohotata i Aotearoa
ko te ‘Tika’
ko te ‘Manaakitanga’
ko te ‘Whanaungatanga’
ko te ‘Auahatanga’
hei orangatonutanga mō te kāhui whānui tonu
tihei mauri ora!

Let us be guided
by the care and wisdom of the deities and ancestors
to create and maintain environments that flourish
to protect and build communities that thrive
let these core values be embedded
in the hearts and minds
of Fire and Emergency New Zealand
‘we do the right thing’
‘we serve and support’
‘we are better together’
‘we strive to improve’
for the long-lasting safety of all
let there be life!

To build Te Ao Māori capability and capacity at Fire and Emergency, we’ve developed the Whare Kōrero app to give you knowledge and confidence to interact with others using te reo Māori and customs.

Using the app, you can learn about customs when visiting a marae, build your own mihi and pepeha, practice Fire and Emergency’s waiata and karakia plus so much more!

You can download the app from your play store(external link)(external link) or app store(external link)(external link) and give it a go. All you need is a wifi connection to complete the download, you do not require an internet connection to use the app. It is also available to the public so your whānau can download it too and you can practice together.

Nāku te rourou nāu te rourou ka ora ai te iwi (With your basket and my basket the people will live)

Hōri Mana, Poutakawaenga Māori for Te Ūpoko walks us through some of Whare Kōrero’s key features in this video
