Dr Sir John Turei Memorial Grant

Introduction

Dr Sir John Te Ahikaiata Turei KNZM, CBE, Hon PhD, Hon BIC became the first national kaumātua of the New Zealand Fire Service in 2000, a position he held until his death in January 2003. The Dr Sir John Te Ahikaiata Turei Memorial Grant (the Grant) supports Sir John’s great passion of fostering and sharing the Māori language with all to ensure its existence. 

The Grant is awarded annually and is for personnel learning te reo Māori. Fire and Emergency New Zealand is committed to the ongoing development of employees. Enhancing their skills and knowledge benefits both the organisation and employees themselves.

Note that the provision of the Grant should be viewed as a benefit to members of the organisation, not a right.

Aims

The aims of the Grant are to:

• further the strategic objectives of the organisation in respect to te reo Māori
• promote principles which Sir John Turei personified, which are
• serve the community with passion and dedication.
• foster excellence in Māori language as a corridor to Māori traditions and protocol.
• respect diversity
• personal commitment
• benefit the personal development of applicants

Purpose

The purpose of the Grant is to help achieve of the organisation's focus on serving our communities and people.

Whakaratonga Iwi – Serving our people

The Grant provides focused financial support for individual personnel learning te reo Māori at a recognised university/whare wānanga, training establishment or other appropriate body. Funds will be available for course-related fees, resources and support to maintain minimum shift cover while the recipient attends tuition.

Alternatively, the Grant can be used to promote te reo Māori to the wider community of Fire and Emergency when budget permits. This variation can be applied when:

• in any financial year, funds are still available after satisfying all requests to the Grant, and
• the expenditure is consistent with purpose of the Grant.

We will announce online:

• when applications for the Grant are open
• the successful applicants.

The selection committee may vary the dates of the application period so they can select the best possible candidates.

The Grant coordinator will maintain a helpline for prospective applicants.

Eligibility

The Grant is available to all Fire and Emergency personnel undertaking study in te reo Māori. 

How to apply

• If you need more information to help you fill in the form, read the guidelines.
• Your application must also have the written support of your Area Manager/Chief Fire Officer/Manager.
• Late applications will not be accepted unless approved by the Selection Committee.
• We may also ask you to present your application to the selection panel.

We will forward all applications to the coordinator by the advertised closing date and the coordinator will register them. The closing date allows applicants enough time to develop their applications. 

The selection committee assesses applications against the criteria set out in the guidelines for the grant.
