Mā te kōrero ka mōhio
Mā te mōhio ka matau
Mā te matauranga ka ora pūmau tonu
Through discussion comes understanding
Through understanding comes knowledge
Through knowledge comes sustainability
E aku nui, e aku rahi, tēnā koutou katoa

Tēnā koutou,

Safe communities are an important part of what Māori want for themselves and their future generations. Māori want to live as Māori, to succeed as Māori, and to participate as global citizens of the world. With a population increase of approximately 40,000 over the last decade and with 84.4 percent of Māori now living in urban areas, fire safety awareness and education are becoming increasingly important.

The role of Pou Takawaenga Māori (Māori Liaison Team) is to assist Fire and Emergency to work effectively with Māori communities in order to reduce the incidence and consequence of fire. We are only too happy to work with you in your communities to help meet this objective.

As well as Pou Takawaenga Māori, there are several external websites which are great resources to tap into. Te Ara(external link) provides a comprehensive guide to New Zealand peoples, natural environment, history, culture, economy and society. An historic perspective can also be gained from Te Ao Hou(external link) which was published from 1952 to 1976 by the Māori Affairs Dept. It includes waiata, haka, mythical tales and record reviews as well as wood carving, cooking, dairy farming and important obituaries. Te Puni Kōkiri (Ministry of Māori Development) is the Crown's principal adviser on Crown-Māori relationships. A handy reference to check for spelling is the online version of Te Aka Māori-English, English-Māori Dictionary(external link) and Kōrero Māori(external link) for everyone who wants to speak the Māori language, or learn more about it.
