The table below shows the steps, tools and responsibilities in each stage of the urban volunteer recruitment process.

Provide information about volunteering

Talk to the potential applicant and provide them with some information to take home and read.

Informal interview

Hold an informal interview/discussion with the applicant and one other person, e.g. an officer.
Note: If the applicant is aged 16 or 17, their parent or guardian may also want to attend.

Invite them to attend brigade activities as an observer over a prescribed period of time and engage in social activities.

Complete application form – aged 18 and over

  • Applicant completes the online application form with the Brigade Leader or VSO and provides two forms of identification.
  • Brigade Leader or VSO sights identification and completes the authorisation question, then electronically signs the form.
  • Print the relevant medical form for the applicant.
    Note: The form is also emailed to the applicant.

Complete application form – age 16 or 17

  • Applicant completes online application form with the Brigade Leader or VSO and takes a copy of the parental consent form home to get signed by a parent or guardian.
  • Print the parental consent form for the applicant.
  • Print the relevant medical form for the applicant.
    Note: The form is also emailed to the applicant.
  • Once parent or guardian signs the form, the brigade emails the completed form to Volunteer Recruitment at volly.applications@fireandemergency.nz.

Security screening

Volunteer Recruitment receives the application and enters details into the police site for vetting, which takes 20 working days.

Medical

Depending on the role the applicant is applying for, they need to:

  • Operational firefighter: Make an appointment with their medical centre and take the medical form (either non-breathing apparatus or using breathing apparatus) to their doctor to complete.
    The doctor keeps one copy on file and emails the medical and invoice to Volunteer Recruitment at screening@fireandemergency.nz
  • Operational support: Applicant completes the Self-Medical Assessment form and emails the completed form to Volunteer Recruitment at screening@fireandemergency.nz
  • Brigade support: No medical required.
  • Medical First Responder and Co-Responder: Applicant makes an appointment with their medical centre and takes the non-breathing apparatus medical form to their doctor to complete.
    The doctor keeps one copy on file and emails the medical and invoice to Volunteer Recruitment at screening@fireandemergency.nz

Acceptance – successful completion of medical and security

  • Volunteer Recruitment issue a volunteer number and email applicant advising them of the number and completion of process.
  • Brigade Leader notified in a weekly report emailed Sunday night.

Decline – medical

Note: All medical declines are determined by the Occupational Health Specialist.

Volunteer Recruitment phones applicant to advise them of the reason for the decline and advises Brigade Leader to discuss other role options.

Deline – security

Volunteer Recruitment emails the applicant and advises the Brigade Leader. If a review is a possibility, then Volunteer Recruitment will suggest it and talk the Brigade Leader through the process.
