Complete paper application form – aged 18 and over

  • Applicant completes and returns form with two forms of identification.
  • Controller or DPRFO signs the application approving identity verification then posts or drops the application into the area office.
    Note: Any authorised person can verify an applicant’s identity and sign the form.
  • Provide applicant with a copy of the relevant medical form and an IR330 for completion.

Complete paper application form – age 16 or 17:

  • Applicant completes the paper application form which must be signed by a parent or guardian.
  • Applicant brings signed application form back to the brigade.
  • Provide applicant with a copy of the relevant medical form and an IR330 for completion.

Note: Completed IR330 form is also sent to Volunteer Recruitment.

Informal interview

Hold an informal interview/discussion with the applicant and one other person, e.g. the DPRFO.

Note: If the applicant is aged 16 or 17 their parent or guardian may also want to attend.

Invite them to attend brigade activities as an observer over a prescribed period of time and engage in social activities.

Send application form to BSC for inputting online

Security screening

Volunteer Recruitment receive the application and enter details into the police site for vetting which takes 20 working days.

Medical

Depending on the role the applicant is applying for, they need to:

  • Operational firefighter: Make an appointment with their medical centre and take the relevant medical form (either non-breathing apparatus or using breathing apparatus) to their doctor to complete.
    The doctor keeps one copy on file and faxes or emails the medical and invoice to Volunteer Recruitment.
  • Operational support, e.g. brigade roles that potentially go out to the field or an operational support role: Applicant completes the Self-Medical Assessment form and emails or faxes completed form to Volunteer Recruitment.
  • Brigade support, e.g. admin only, doesn’t go out into the field: No medical required.

Acceptance – successful completion of medical and security

  • Volunteer Recruitment issue a volunteer number and email applicant advising number and completion of process.
  • Controller notified in a weekly report emailed Sunday night.

Rejection – medical decline

Note: All medical declines are determined by the Occupational Health Specialist.

Volunteer Recruitment phone applicant to advise the reason for the decline and advise PRFO to discuss other role options.

Rejection – security decline

Volunteer Recruitment email or phone the applicant and advise the Controller/DPRFO. If a review is a possibility, then Volunteer Recruitment will suggest it and talk the Controller/DPRFO through the process.
