Pamela Dawon, Business Operations Manager

This month we’re spotlighting Pamela Dawson – Business Operations Manager. Find out about Pamela’s background and role within Te Ihu.

What do you do in your role?

As the Business Operations Manager for Te Ihu Region, I lead the Planning & Performance and Business Services teams. My role is all about making sure our region has the systems, resources, and planning in place to support our people—whether paid staff or volunteers—to do their jobs safely and effectively. I work alongside the Regional Leadership Team to make sure we’re future-focused and aligned with national priorities, but also responsive to what’s happening locally. In short, I help keep the engine room running so the front line can focus on protecting and serving our communities.

What’s coming up for you?

Over the coming months, I’m looking forward to continuing our work across the regional response capability portfolios, as well as contributing to several national projects. These include the National CRM & Engagement Forum, the FENZ Employee Led Network Disability Forum, the Safe, Efficient & Resilient Operations SPE work, and the Emergency Management Programme. These initiatives offer valuable opportunities to contribute to national conversations, strengthen networks, and keep advocating for inclusive leadership and strong regional alignment. It’s always busy, but incredibly rewarding to be part of work that helps shape the future of how we operate and support our people on the ground.

What do you love about Fire and Emergency?

There’s a real heart to this organisation. I’m constantly inspired by the commitment and care shown by our people—especially our volunteers, who give so much to their communities. What I value most is the sense of purpose and the genuine drive to make a difference. It’s a privilege to be part of something that’s not just about emergency response, but also about relationships, resilience, and readiness.

What do you do in your free time?

Outside of work, I love spending time with my husband Mark and our son Connor—especially fishing, boating, and caravanning around the South Island whenever we get the chance. This is my second year as coach for Connor’s Special Olympics basketball team as we gear up for the National Summer Games—it’s been a huge highlight! I’m also a lifelong learner, and right now I’m enrolled in papers to add to my governance knowledge to complement over 20 years of experience in leadership and coaching. It’s a great way to stay connected to my purpose and keep learning.
