Work underway to support fire safety in older persons’ homes
Over the last five years, people over the age of 60 represented 55% of fatalities in house fires. To reduce the number of older persons’ injuries and fatalities in house fires, in addition to Fire and Emergency’s efforts, we’re taking a multiagency approach to leverage the reach and influence of our partners.
Collectively, we want to empower our communities to take ownership of fire safety and encourage people to check on neighbours and whānau to make sure they are safe from fire.
District teams and LACs are currently working through a plan, with a view to start bringing on board key local partners and stakeholders that can help reach this vulnerable older audience.
A suite of resources for our teams to use in engaging with local partners and stakeholders is now available, including key messages, a printable fire safety guide that can be used by our partners and other assets.
Finally, remember your own whānau and neighbours – there’s no better time than right now to be the fire champion. Reach out and make sure their homes are fire safe too. Not sure what to do? Come along to one of our fire safety sessions and learn Fire Safety 101:
