A house fire, no matter its size, is stressful and disorientating. That is why this Escape Week we have been sharing a powerful range of advertising to show the public just how important it is to have an escape plan to increase their likelihood of getting out of a fire safely.

Over this week, a three minute simulation will play for the entire ad break during prime time to show the confronting reality of what it is like in a fire for a family without an escape plan. You can watch the ad below.

Our powerful three minute ad break takeover

Last week we told several real-life stories of people that have been affected by a fatal housefire or near-miss in the NZ Herald. Some of the brave people that shared these very personal accounts are our very own Fire and Emergency people. These real stories are certainly not easy to re-live, but they create impact, and encourage people to get their escape plans in place.

Thanks to the Fire and Emergency people who shared their stories in the feature article. These included Malcolm Frost Senior Volunteer Fire Fighter, Dave Wills Procurement Manager and Volunteer Fire Fighter, Toni Bainbridge Volunteer Operational Support and Jayne McCullum, Senior Communications Advisor.

You can read their stories online(external link).

Another feature we ran with the NZ Herald shows a ‘double false cover’ on the paper’s front page of a real-life family that lost 19 year old Zac Woodroofe and his pet dog Boy to a house fire in 2016. Our team worked closely with the family, broaching the sensitive details of their loss. The family though, wanted to share their story to help other families to make sure they are fire safe, and prepared.

As a member of Fire and Emergency, you’re one of our key advocates in encouraging your networks and community to create an escape plan. So this Escape Week remember to share the below messages when you’re out talking to the public, friends and whānau.

Fire gets real, fast, and a house fire can become unsurvivable in less than three minutes. You can create an escape plan on escapemyhouse.co.nz. It only takes a few minutes.  You have time now. In the future you may not.

Check out our resources that you can share this Escape Week(external link).
