Submissions on Local Advisory Committee boundaries close on 18 May
New Zealanders are currently being asked what they think of making our Local Advisory Committee boundaries the same as those used by the 16 Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) groups.
Submitters are asked to provide feedback, or suggest alternatives, to our proposal. The six week consultation ends at 5pm on Friday 18 May 2018.

We are setting up Local Advisory Committees (LACs) across the country to help keep us informed of the fire and emergency risks, and needs, of local communities.
The Fire and Emergency New Zealand Act 2017 calls upon the Fire and Emergency to establish Local Advisory Committees (LACs). Advice from the LACs will help us ensure our services continue to meet New Zealand’s needs now and in the future.
In order to set up the committees, we need to establish the geographical boundaries within which they will operate.
It’s important to note that LAC boundaries are not the same as operational boundaries. They won’t determine how Fire and Emergency organises itself operationally.
“We want to build on the strong links we have with communities and to work with them to help identify the risks and challenges they’re facing now, and into the future,” says Board Chair, Paul Swain.
“Aligning our LAC boundaries with those already in use by Civil Defence Emergency Management groups will enable greater coordination among emergency services, and advice on local risk and needs.”
The committees will be set up from mid-2018 onwards, once the Fire and Emergency New Zealand Board has set the boundaries for LAC areas. We expect to have the committees fully established across New Zealand by 2020.
