We are committed to supporting our people’s wellbeing and recognise it has been a hard year, so wanted to provide some tips to support you this summer.

The three B’s are some simple tips we can incorporate into our everyday to help us be well. The three B’s concept comes from Geoff Ruthe, who is a clinical psychologist that Fire and Emergency used to facilitate the Psychological Wellbeing Workshops. It is a simple model of three factors that can attribute to your overall vitality and wellbeing – balance, beauty and beacons.

Balance

At times we can struggle to get a good balance between work and our personal lives.

To help maintain balance in your life consider:

  • How you manage your emails and try to limit sending emails out of standard working hours.
  • Remote working can often mean a lot of meetings. Try keeping Friday’s free for thinking and focus time.
  • Think about adjusting notification settings on your phones and manage your screen time.
  • Take time away from your desk by including regular micro pauses and lunch breaks to move your body or get some fresh air.

Beauty

It is important to have something beautiful in our lives, something that matters to us.

Beauty can mean different things to different people:

  • Nature; like listening to the rain, watching the ocean lap against the shore, waterfalls or the morning chorus of the birds or the neighbourhood dog.
  • Music.
  • Spending time and connecting with the people in our lives.

Beacons

Having something to focus on or look forward to (long term or daily thing)

  • Your morning ritual coffee, or reading the paper
  • A holiday, a sport event or cultural event
  • Catching up with friends or family for lunch

Be kind to yourself, spend time doing the things you enjoy, and have a safe holiday season.
