Fire and Emergency New Zealand is committed to working with Māori as tangata whenua(external link) and through this commitment, we recognise that Māori language is a taonga, a unique cultural treasure.

Te Wiki o te reo Māori (Monday 13th - 17th September) is a time for our organisation to celebrate the Māori language by getting more of us speaking, hearing, and experiencing te reo Māori.

Learning a language can seem daunting and you might not know where to start. We’ve organised "Kawhe me te Kōrero" - Coffee and Chats, which take place on Teams with a professional Kaiako (Teacher).

The topics you can attend are;

- Pronunciation

- Pepeha

- Karakia

- Open session (to ask specific pātai)

Head to this Portal page to sign up for a Kawhe me te Kōrero and check out the other resources to help you improve your knowledge of te reo Māori.

By improving our knowledge and use of te reo Māori we will be more effective in building relationships to contribute to community wellbeing and resilience as iwi and Māori leaders are key stakeholders in our organisation’s operations. Karawhuia! Give it a go!
