Wednesday 5 December was International Volunteer Day, when organisations across New Zealand and around the world recognise volunteers for their effort and value.

We couldn’t do what we do without our 11,000 volunteers giving their time and dedication to help keep our communities safe. So we took the opportunity to publicly say “thanks” to our volunteers via a short video message on Facebook(external link). The post proved very popular, being shared 649 times to reach more than 100,000 people.

Many people added their own messages of thanks, including “a huge thank you to all of you. I know how much time & effort goes into volunteer training. Congratulations to you all and enjoy your day”, and “amazing dedicated men and women who save lives and property. A huge thank you to every one of you.”

Our Chief Executive, Rhys Jones, also acknowledged the “vital and varied role our volunteers play in building resilient communities across New Zealand” in his blog.
