As part of Fire and Emergency’s journey towards having a Local Advisory Committee (LAC) in every area across the motu, recruitment is underway for members of our new Wellington and Canterbury LACs.

The new LACs will be the voice of the regions significant to New Zealand’s economic, cultural and urban development. Canterbury, known for its diverse demographic mix, expansive plains, the Southern Alps, with economy driven by agriculture, tourism, manufacturing, technology and its vibrant urban and cultural scene. And Wellington, with its diverse population, scenic landscapes and a dynamic economy centred around creative industries, tourism, hospitality, and professional services. Both cities face seismic risks, and the effects of climate change, including wildfires and extreme weather events.

Wellington LAC will cover Wellington, Porirua and Kapiti Coast, Hutt City and Wairarapa.

Canterbury LAC will cover Canterbury and mid-South Canterbury Districts, covering the area from just south of the Clarence River down to the Waitaki River.

What are LACs and what do they do?

Fire and Emergency New Zealand works with thirteen Local Advisory Committees (LACs) around the motu to ensure communities’ voices and interests are reflected in our national and local planning. They provide us with independent advice on what their communities value, their needs, and the risks they face.

LACs help to shape the future of Fire and Emergency’s support for communities by enabling us to better understand what matters to communities - now and in the future. This means we can better support them to prepare for, respond to, and recover well from emergencies when they happen.

To serve on these committees, we are looking for people from diverse community, social, business, and industry groups, who are well-connected and respected within those groups and able to provide deeper insights into their views and concerns. Some governance and/or strategic management experience is preferred.

If you know people like this in your community that might be a good fit, please encourage them to find out more and apply at www.fireandemergency.nz/LACs(external link)

Applications open 3 February and close on 2 March 2025.
