Responding to tomorrow: highlights from this year’s UFBA Conference
This year’s United Fire Brigades’ Association (UFBA) Conference returned to Te Pae Convention Centre in Ōtautahi Christchurch on 7-9 November, with the theme “Responding to Tomorrow” - a call to collectively prepare for what lies ahead, whether operational, societal, environmental, or technological.
As emergency responders, our people are used to reacting in the moment. This year’s conference offered a valuable opportunity to pause, look ahead, and strengthen our readiness for the challenges on the horizon - together.
Hosted by Jenny-May Clarkson, the event featured keynote speakers who explored the impact of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, on emergency response, as well as strategies for building high-performing and resilient teams.
Fire and Emergency teams took part in three Learning Labs focused on volunteerism, training and progression, the new Vetting Policy, and our work with communities to promote fire safety education, prevention, and voluntary compliance - including ways to strengthen engagement with Māori. These interactive sessions sparked plenty of thoughtful discussion, both on and off stage.
A popular feature was the Q&A session with our Learning and Development, Response Capability, Equipment and Logistics, Fleet, and Organisational Development leaders. In just 30 minutes, we received around 100 questions from those watching online alone, in addition to plenty of questions from the audience. Those whose questions weren’t answered at the Q&A session were encouraged to visit the exhibition booth for a face-to-face kōrero or check the Portal once responses become available.
Across six Fire and Emergency exhibition stands, we showcased the breadth of our mahi — from Volunteerism, Eke Taumata, People-Led Networks and Wellbeing, to Leadership Development, Operational Response, and Prevention. As always, the Uniform, Training, and ICT stands drew plenty of attention.
Our area, dubbed “Fire and Emergency Lane" by the volunteers, was strategically located at the entrance to the conference space. The cohesive branding and strong presence ensured we caught the eye of everyone coming through.
It was a lively, collegial event - full of opportunities to enjoy whanaungatanga with colleagues from across the motu, share ideas, reconnect with leaders, and learn something new.
Till next time!
