Last Friday, 11 May, 24 of our people from across five regions attended the Close Out Event of Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s Officer Career Board. This programme saw them undergo two years of development initiatives to become our next generation of inspiring leaders.

The Officer Career Board is a professional development programme for officers to ensure they are well placed and have the right opportunities to step up and take on more senior roles in the future.

Over the past two years, participants took part in various development initiatives such as 360-degree feedback, mentoring, coaching, action learning groups, special projects, and secondments. Participants were supported by regional career boards who met regularly with participants to talk about their progress, learning and challenges.

Friday was about celebrating all the participants’ dedication and achievement, as well as looking back over the last two years and reflecting on the successes, and what each person has learnt that will make them a better leader. Guest speakers included Rhys Jones, CE, and Lisa Tamati, Ultra marathon runner.

Since starting the programme, many of the participants have gone on to leadership roles, including some secondments.

The next career board programme will focus on development for Senior Leaders and will kick off in late 2018.
