Fire and Emergency has published new guides for landowners on using fire as a land management tool on https://fireandemergency.nz/farms-rural-properties-and-rural-businesses/fire-as-a-land-management-tool/(external link)

The guides are useful both for landowners and for our personnel who are advising them. They include:

  • An overview guide, outlining principles for safe use of fire as a land management tool
  • A detailed guide on planning, preparing and performing a pile or windrow burn
  • A detailed guide on planning, preparing and performing a crop residue or stubble burn

The guides, which replace the old NRFA publication ‘A Landowners Guide to Land Clearing by Prescribed Burning’, were developed with input from subject matter experts including the Rural Reduction Technical Group and Risk Reduction team.

Further updates will be made to the guides in 2018 with the SCION research program and partners including the Forest Owners’ Association, Department of Conservation and Federated Farmers.

Please send any feedback or comments on the guides to riskreduction.integration@fireandemergency.nz.
