At Fire and Emergency, a near miss is defined as:

an unplanned event which offers an opportunity for continual improvement

in the way we protect our people and the public.

This may include:

  • An event which may have reasonably resulted in harm,
  • An event which prevented serious risk of harm from immediate or imminent exposure to a hazard.

By understanding the frequency and context of near misses, Fire and Emergency can prevent an injury or illness occurring under similar circumstances. A near miss reported today has the potential to protect the next shift.

We will be communicating lessons learned from near-miss reports, with the aim of improving the overall safety of our firefighters and the public.

Keep your eye out on the Near Miss Portal(external link) page for updates. This year we will be focusing on some near misses which are associated with our critical risks:

February:  Working at heights.

May:  Working in and around water.

August:  Working in and around fire.

November: Working in and around moving vehicles.

You can find out more on near miss reporting, and report a near miss, on our dedicated Portal page(external link).

Near misses are blame free and non-punitive

Please report all near misses though Safe@Work.
