Last week firefighters from Tauranga, Mount Maunganui, Hamilton, Kawerau, Rotorua, Gisborne and Taupō put in a marathon effort for a good cause.

Together, they completed a 42km course between Greerton, Tauranga and Mount Maunganui fire stations and raised more than $7,000 for Te Kiwi Māia.

The charity provides rehabilitation, recovery and respite for firefighters and other services’ personnel.

This year whānau, supporters and two personnel from Hato Hone St John also took part.

There was one important rule for all participants – you couldn’t go it alone. Everyone had to complete the event with at least one other person so that they could encourage and support each other.

Participants could choose the distance they took on and how they would complete it with most opting to run, walk or bike. For some the marathon wasn’t long enough – and they completed 50 kms!
