This week, Fire and Emergency Board formally appointed 21 new members to Local Advisory Committees (LACs) in Northland, Waikato, Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough, West Coast and Otago. Thirteen current members were also reappointed for another term.

The new members will help our well-established LACs to continue to provide a voice for these communities, supporting us to get our emergency planning right, and providing independent advice to our Board. They’ll engage with community groups about local needs and to understand what they value, their needs and the risks they face.

We look forward to formally welcoming them into the committees and working with them.

Nga mihi nui to all outgoing LAC members, for your contribution and commitment to your LACs and your communities. Your thoughtful local insights and dedication have given voice to the communities we serve, and your advice has helped Fire and Emergency’s planning and service delivery.

Background information

  • LACs are appointed by Fire and Emergency Board to share their communities’ views of the strategic issues, risks and opportunities for our wider organisation.
  • LAC members seek feedback from their communities and meet three times a year to discuss and provide advice on their communities’ views.
  • Fire and Emergency established the first seven LACs in 2020, in Northland, Tairāwhiti, Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough, West Coast, Chatham Islands, and Otago.
  • Four more LACs in Waikato, Taranaki, Nelson-Tasman and Southland were stood up in August 2024, followed by Bay of Plenty, Manawatū-Whanganui in December 2024.
  • In March 2025, we stood up the Auckland LAC, with Wellington and Canterbury LACs announced in July 2025, completing the national implementation of 16 LACs across the motu.
  • The committees will be welcoming new members at their meetings in early 2026 and planning their engagement with communities.
