In March 2023, Fire and Emergency Board appointed 19 new members to six of our seven Local Advisory Committees (LACs) in Northland, Tairāwhiti, Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough, West Coast and Otago. Many existing LAC members were also reappointed for a second term and will provide valuable continuity to the committees.

In addition, the Fire and Emergency Board agreed to Fire and Emergency standing up nine further LACs next year. Before making decisions about standing up the remaining LACs, Fire and Emergency reviewed how the current Committees are operating and allowed some additional time to embed a new Fire and Emergency district management structure. Our district management teams are an important connection for LACs so, to ensure the success of these Committees, we wanted to make sure our teams were fully established.

With the evaluation providing positive results and our district teams well established, our Board have agreed we’re now able to set up the final LACs in:

  • Southland
  • Taranaki
  • Waikato
  • Nelson Tasman
  • Auckland
  • Wellington
  • Bay of Plenty
  • Whanganui/Manawatū
  • Canterbury

Establishing each LAC will take time, so planning is underway, and we expect to have a fulsome plan in the next few months.
