The independent reviewers of the management of the fire at the New Zealand International Convention Centre at Sky City arrive in New Zealand on February 12 to begin their investigations.

Jeremy Fewtrell, Deputy Commissioner Strategic Capability, Fire and Rescue, NSW and Paul Considine Director, AFAC Capability and Assurance, will be in New Zealand until 20 February. They will be meeting and interviewing key stakeholders and our firefighters.

The independent reviewers will consider firefighting operations and performance on the ground as well as Fire and Emergency support activities; including the management of the health, safety and wellbeing of staff across the incident ground. The review will not consider any matters regarding the origin and cause of the fire.

Fire and Emergency regularly undertakes operational reviews of large incidents in order to improve safety, effectiveness and efficiency.

Given the significance of the NZ International Convention Centre fire, the Chief Executive and National Commander requested the operational review be conducted by independent reviewers and sponsored by the Deputy Chief Executive, Office of the Chief Executive to ensure the findings are able to withstand scrutiny and be free from any perceived influence or bias.

The independent review will be published when finalised and the National Commander will be responsible for implementing the response to the review. The terms of reference for the review can be found here(external link)
