New Zealand’s Governor-General, The Rt Hon Dame Patsy Reddy, regularly honours our firefighters when the Queen’s New Years and Birthday honours are announced each year. That, coupled with regularly meeting our firefighters at community events, piqued her interest in learning more about the men and women who make up our service.

So during her recent four-day trip to the Bay of Plenty, she included a visit to our National Training Centre (NTC) in Rotorua.

Ian Pickard, National Training Centre Manager, said it was an honour to host Dame Patsy.

“She was very interested to learn about the scope of training we offer here, and about firefighters’ changing role in supporting their communities,” he said.

“During her short visit we were able to share a number of different experiences, including a group of volunteers testing skills learnt on the qualified firefighter course in a fire scenario, a live fire couch burning demonstration, our award-winning virtual reality suite, and career trainees learning medical response.”

Members of the NTC leadership team also accompanied Dame Patsy on her tour of the centre to talk about the various aspects of our training facility.
