Safety, Health and Wellbeing Strategic Roadmap

Safety, health, and wellbeing is everyone’s responsibility.

Late last year we launched the Safety, Health and Wellbeing Strategic Roadmap this is new approach to how we think about and continuously improve safety, health and wellbeing across the organisation.

The roadmap has been designed to support us all to create a safer, healthier workplace, so that everyone goes home safe and well, every time | Ka hoki ora, haumaru hoki te katoa, i ngā wā katoa.

The roadmap framework integrates Te Whare Tapa Whā, a Māori health and wellbeing model. The model describes health and wellbeing as a wharenui (a meeting house), supported by four walls:

  • Taha wairua - Spiritual wellbeing.
  • Taha hinengaro - Mental and emotional wellbeing.
  • Taha tinana - Physical wellbeing.
  • Taha whānau - Family and social wellbeing.

When these elements are in balance, we thrive. When one or more is out of balance, our wellbeing can be affected.

The roadmap guides our mahi to strengthen and protect our wharenui. It focuses on improving and maturing our safety, health and wellbeing systems, processes, and support across the organisation. Much of this work is already underway, led by teams across the organisation and captured in the workplan that underpins the roadmap.

Organisation workplan

To bring the roadmap to life, an organisation wide workplan has been developed for the 2025/26 financial year. This workplan was developed in consultation with National Managers and Business Owners across the organisation, and captures the mahi which supports our people’s safety, health, and wellbeing, and is already planned or underway.

The workplan sets out how we will contribute to shift towards safer, healthier work throughout the 2025/26 financial year and track progress against key milestones.

Next steps

We are working towards refreshing the workplan quarterly to reflect progress against milestones. So that everyone can have visibility of how we’re tracking. Early next year, additional communications will be published outlining the next steps for embedding the SHW Strategic Roadmap across the organisation.
