Another really effective way to cyber up is to keep your apps and devices updated. With every update to your favourite app, the developers are not only adding new features, but they're also often fixing security risks that keep bugs and viruses out.

A device that's not regularly updated puts Fire and Emergency's networks and systems at risk. Attackers also often use this avenue to gather personal information, allowing them to impersonate you and access your accounts.

On most of your devices, you can switch on updates to automatically detect when a new version is available, meaning you don't have to keep an eye out for updates and then install them.

With the number of cyber security threats our ICT team see increasing every week, staying updated ensures you are as prepared as possible for cyber-attacks and malicious online activities.

Our advice:

  • When you’re alerted to an update for your device, don’t ignore it — install it as soon as possible. As well as adding new features, updates keep bugs and viruses out and fix security risks that attackers can use to gain access to your information.
  • Try setting updates to take place automatically whenever a new version is available. That way, you don’t have to think about it!
  • Help protect access to a device by using a passcode and set the screen auto-lock timeout at three minutes or less.
  • Try turning off the screen when you are not using it so that it locks immediately.
  • Don't install unnecessary apps onto your work-issued devices. Avoid the risk and only use apps approved by Fire and Emergency for Fire and Emergency related work.
