Fire and Emergency is pleased to announce it has been officially recertified under the Toitū carbonreduce programme, the third year we have been certified under the programme.

Toitū Envirocare (a subsidiary of Manaaki Whenua/Landcare Research) audits our annual emissions data to ensure we are accurately calculating and reporting our emissions under the relevant reporting standards.

Being carbonreduce certified means Fire and Emergency is actively working to measure and manage its carbon footprint, and demonstrates its commitment to address the impacts of climate change.

Our baseline was established for the 2018/19 financial year, and in the two years following we measured an 18 percent decline in our total emissions, which was driven mainly through a reduction in domestic and international travel.

We are also seeing progress from improvements we have made to the way we work, such as the implementation of a centralised travel office.

ICT advancements enabled us to work from home more easily, leading to reductions in emissions related to people travelling to and from the office for work. People still produce emissions at home, but to a lesser extent than when they work from the office.

Our Sustainability Team is nearing the completion of Fire and Emergency’s Climate Response Plan 2022 to 2030.

This plan summarises our carbon footprint, and the impact climate change will likely have on our operations in the future. It also highlights focus areas to reduce our emissions and adapt to the changes of climate change.

The recertification is timely given Sunday (5 June) was World Environment Day.

The theme of World Environment Day was #OnlyOneEarth – a hashtag we used to highlight(external link) the increasing prevalence of large and devastating wildfires, while also asking people to be prepared and go to checkitsalright.nz
