More than 11,800 people volunteer with Fire and Emergency across Aotearoa New Zealand.  

They give their time to serve their communities in various roles as firefighters, operational support, medical first responders and brigade support.  

They take time out from their families, jobs and lives to attend callouts, training and community events.   

We appreciate the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. To acknowledge this, we offer an annual reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses.  

The full reimbursement amount is $380. For all pro-rated amounts visit the Annual volunteer reimbursement(external link) page. All payments are non-taxable.  

Volunteers only need to opt-in once. If you have already opted-in or if you received the reimbursement last year – there’s nothing more you need to do. If you’re eligible, you will receive the payment in your account on 23 December 2025.
