Kei ngā ihuoneone, kei ngā taituarā o te tari, tēnei ka mihi

Ka pai for giving te reo a go during Te Wiki o te Reo Māori

Here’s a few pics and stories from our celebrations from across Aotearoa.

In Te Hiku, a crew visited Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Kaikohe to promote fire safety and Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori to Year 1 and 2 tamariki.

Children were able to have a go at the evacuation challenge which teaches the importance of get down (me heke), get low, (me heke rawa) and get out (me puta) to our safe meeting place – te waahi haumaru.

Kia kaha te reo Māori

In Te Ihu at Omeka House (Justice Emergency Service Precinct), there was a combined effort from Fire and Emergency, NZ Police, Maori Land Court and St John to learn language for the office, songs and Māori customs. Staff members Jake and Casey from Māori Land Court led the group and held three sessions over the week. Ka pai!

Also in Christchurch, Fire and Emergency people gathered to enjoy a feast of stories and lessons from the Māori world. They story telling was hosted and presented by Anton Mathews who welcomed people into his local food and coffee shop.

It was a great gathering of on duty and off duty crews who enjoyed the learning and sharing sessions with Anton.

With much thanks to SSO Karl Kitchen and Anton Mathews for organising this event.

Kāti rā mo tēnei wā.
