A message from the NZ Firefighters Welfare Society – 2019 summary
Over the last twelve months, the New Zealand Firefighters Welfare Society (NZFFWS) has worked hard to make life easier and better for firefighters and emergency services. We have spent more than $130,000 supporting our more than 700 members around New Zealand. Our members have stayed at our holiday homes a total of 2000+ nights. Our healthcare plan, Healthcare 99 has paid out more than $1.3Million in medical costs.
Our purpose is to deliver support for members. To that end, society representatives have continued to sit on numerous Fire and Emergency working groups, where we ask for Fire and Emergency to work with us for the betterment and support of its personnel. We have also supported specific personnel and brigades through tough times, rehoming some affected by evacuations and organising BBQs for brigades in need of help.
Mental health is a hot topic. Along with the Associated Agencies, the Welfare Society is pushing the envelope in this space. For instance, our board and office team have done CISM training. It is also good to see a significant increase in members taking up our counselling benefit to access independent support, with a 1200% increase in the past two years.
We are looking forward to delivering more for you all in 2020. Have a safe and merry Christmas.
