In 2020, the Department of Conservation, Lake Rotoiti Volunteer Fire Brigade and the local community came together to establish the Rotoiti FireSmart Working Group and were given permission to form a ‘Green Firebreak’ alongside an important access road.

In March 2023, Fire and Emergency Board appointed 19 new members to six of our seven Local Advisory Committees (LACs) in Northland, Tairāwhiti, Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough, West Coast and Otago. In addition, the Fire and Emergency Board agreed to Fire and Emergency standing up nine further LACs next year.
O’Week season is in full swing across the motu and our teams have been popping up at universities in Auckland, Waikato, Wellington, Canterbury, Otago and Invercargill to engage one of our high-risk audience – young people living in rental accommodation – and encourage them to ‘stay off the stove’ if they’re drunk or high.
